Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan? His estate is nearby too and open to the public (it's part of the University of Michigan campus, donated by Henry Ford II after Henry and Clara had passed away) Anyway they have a pretty good collection of trains including this leviathan:

being the travel buff, and AAA alum, that I am, I can tell you that Greenfield Village/Henry Ford museum gets the big thumbs up. My brother is a big JFK guy, and I drove him up there one weekend for the specific purpose of showing him the very limousine that was involved in the asassination. Odd that it continued to be used for many years.

Yeah, the C&O Allegheny must have been quite an engine. There were three main locomotive builders- Baldwin (Philadelphia), Alco (Schenectady), and our very own Lima, Ohio. Limas were the 'Cadillacs' of engines, and that particular model was their monster.

From a scientific point of view, they really didn't perform that well.

But they are beautiful to look at, and engineers who were lucky enough to run them claimed it was the highlight of their careers.

There are two left (1604 is in Baltimore) but neither can run. If, for some reason, Bill Gates decides to give me $100M, I may try to fix one up and get it running again.

I went there as a kid and two things stand out. One was a very old automatic apple peeler - you placed an apple on the device, wound a crank, and it would cut the entire peel off in one piece. The other was the Buggatti Royale - at the time I thought it was the most gorgeous car ever made.

Scroll down 2nd photo, the wheel base is over 12 ft. Well, perhaps the V16 Dusenbergs are a tie. Sweeeeet!
